Diversity Vanguard Award

In January 2020, Indiana Tech hosted its 2nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast. The theme, Sustaining a Spirit of Hope, emphasized the value of perseverance in the journey to transformative change.

In an effort to recognize those who had impacted positive change within our campus community and the region, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion implemented two new awards which were presented to an internal individual and a community partner. The Diversity Vanguard Award was created to celebrate individuals, departments and external organizations advancing initiatives which support diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion at Indiana Tech. The award recipients must have proven themselves an action taker in the area of inclusion and community support, as well as demonstrated a sensitivity to the unique needs and interests of marginalized populations.

Our inaugural winners were Dr. Susan McGrade, Indiana Tech professor of English, and Donnevin Wolfe of Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

In January 2021, we will recognize two additional champions of diversity; Dr. Terri A. Shaw and Mr. Clifford M. Clarke. These two individuals have greatly impacted our work to become a more equitable campus community. Their contributions have embodied our 2021 theme of “Provoking a Spirit of Justice”.

Dr. Terri A. Shaw is our recipient for internal recognition. Dr. Shaw led the efforts to establish Faculty Senate’s first Diversity and Inclusion Committee and has aided the Indiana Tech community through her prioritization of diversity within her role. She has also served as a mentor to many students throughout her time at Tech, as well as an advisor to several student organizations and faculty development initiatives.

This year’s community partner recipient is Mr. Clifford Clarke of C2 IT Advisors L.L.C.. Clifford has been steadfast in his commitment to advancing Indiana Tech’s mission for diversity and inclusion. Through his work with the Alumni chapter, as well as teaching classes, he has set an example and established connections with Indiana Tech students and employees by engaging them with opportunities to serve the Fort Wayne Community.

Dr. Shaw and Mr. Clarke will be recognized on January 21, 2021 during Indiana Tech’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration Breakfast. We invite all campus and community partners to join us for this special, virtual service in celebration of the legacy left by Dr. King.
